For those wondering where the emails asking for donations to the Tahoe ride for Team in Training are now know the answer. This year, I have decided to dedicate the next 7-8 months raising money for and tackling a new challenge: the 3 day walk for breast cancer.
"3 days of walking?" you ask? Yes, 3 days in San Diego for a total of 60 miles. I am participating in this with my friends Janis and Ellen and new friends I am sure we will meet along the way.
Now the FUN part... YOUR part... As always, I treasure your support of all my endeavors, this one will be no different.
Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.
Please click on the button to donate - each donation gives me more reason to continue the many, many, many miles of walking I will do before November.
Topics
Sometimes, through all the tired feet, the hours plodding along, the harassment of my friends and family for donations, the activities missed because of training.... sometimes you (I) forget what this is all about.
I am extremely fortunate. I have not had a personal battle with cancer. My grandfather had cancer, and while I was too young to know what all was going on, I knew it was scary and it took him away. I have known others who have battled the disease or lost loved ones. While I empathize and feel for them, I really don't know what it is like personally. I can only imagine what it might be like.
Sometimes you regain a sense of a battle that is so much bigger then just one person (me.) Sometimes you realize that you might be able to help - you might be able to make a difference in the life of someone else. Sometimes you get a little glimpse into what it must be like and come away with a renewed sense of purpose and why you (I) do the things I do.
I invite you to read Jenné's blog. Amazing experience. http://jenneink.blogs.com/

So the pinky toe is pretty much back to normal...still a bit puffy - but not hurting.
This last Saturday, Janis, Brooke, Anne and I did a 9 mile walk along the beach path. My how my body stiffened up after being toe-bound for so long. It was nice to be out in the sunshine with the (kind of) cool breeze coming in off the water.

Training has been at somewhat of a standstill until I reach the glorious day when I can again don closed shoes and walk in something other then flip-flips. Glorious!

So the last couple of weeks a few of us have still met at the same spot, but this time headed north up toward Santa Monica. Our bonus with this new direction?
The beach at Santa Monica.... there are some cute boys playing there - beach volleyball, the beach "gym", the path for skaters. Needless to say, it help distract us from our seemingly never-ending routine of one foot in front of the other.
Lorraine got fitted for some new shoes. We commented about how neither of us would ever choose our pairs by appearance.. so we both have had to suck it up and buy what is best for our strides...looks aside.
Next week, we graduate to 12 miles walks...

So far, I have logged around a hundred miles of walking for this bad boy. I have had to replace my old shoes as the support was gone... lovely. But, the new shoes (after one pair that was not good) now let me walk all comfy and supported. Yeah!! Lauren brings her dog, Calvin, on our walks with us.. he is so awesome and is quite the trooper plodding along with us on our adventures. Abbie, my boss' dog came with us as well.. it was like a puppy parade. The support has been awesome and I am enjoying all the walking/outdoor time. I am taking advantage of audiobooks to break up my solo walks... it can get a wee bit boring on my own.. the audiobooks are awesome.

So the first week of training officially started for the 6 month program. I am not having to get used to getting up at the crack of dawn again to start the fun. I developed a route that takes me to work (2 miles) then an alternate back home (3.4 miles) so I can get in 5 miles just on my "commute." Then the longer walks on the weekend. It is pretty cool seeing the enthusiasm of my teammates and others I talk to about the event and the Susan G Komen Foundation. It is also wonderful how friendly and welcoming the people are that I have talked to so far - be they employees of the 3 Day or participants. I am looking forward to making lots of new friends over the next 6 months. This week will end with me logging in about 21 miles of walking (with a little tiny bit of running tossed in. heh.) As always, many thanks for the support, encouragement and donations!

Training has not officially started yet and I am amazed by the support that is flowing my way. Not just monetarily, but also in spirit. It is always inspiring to me to get encouragement from my friends (and strangers!)
Our little team is growing, which is awesome. Means not only more money raised for the cause, but also more people to talk with, train with and join with in this little adventure.
I am looking forward to this event and the experience I will gain. Thanks to all who have donated so far!!! You are awesome!!

Got the page made...the training program begins. You know, when I think about it, 60 miles is around the point where we are either in Truckee or King's Beach on the Tahoe ride. By then, I would have been riding for hours. It is also close to walking 3 marathons in a row... best not to think in those terms. This is going to be interesting. I am thinking blister care will be in order later this year! Wonder how I can rig the ipod to keep us all entertained... :D
