Let's fight Breast Cancer TOGETHER!

"The whole of life is but a moment of time. It is our duty, therefore to use it, not to misuse it."
~Plutarch
I am ready to use it!
Recenltly, my aunt Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer. The crazy thing was she went for her FIRST mammogram and was given the awful news. Within weeks of learning of her diagnosis, she was prepared for a mastectomy. Overwhelmed by the emotional, physical and financial disaster of the situation, she is beating this disease. She is AMAZING!
In my heart, I wanted to help her--to take away the pain of reality. I realized that it's not just about helping her, its about helping all women fight for the cure. . .it's about making sure my daughter has a cure and that my friends' daughters, all of our daughters never have to fight this battle. . .
I am going to walk this 3-day race for the cure, and beside me will be my "favorite" cousin Missy and my aunt Donna and many other women who feel the same way!
Please support me as I take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer! The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.
So, help me MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Longest Distance Yet
Yesterday, I walked with several other breast cancer walkers through Trumbull and Shelton, up and down many hills almost 11.5 miles in about 3.5 hours with 2 stretch, potty breaks!! And suprisingly, I am not that sore. I was a bit yesterday, and today I am a little, but in all, I feel terrific! WWOOO HOOO!

Walking Progress
Last Sunday I walked my first 8 mile leg. We did it in less than 2.5 hours, AND we took a brief break for bathrooms and stretching. It was a much faster pace than I am used to, but I made it, and didn't feel that bad. Yesterday, I walked about 5 miles with Dave. I hope to walk 10 miles next weekend both Sat. and Sun. We will see what happens.

Since I began training in mid-January, I have walked 50.37. Almost the total amount needed to walk the 3 days. And it took me over a month!! LOL! I need to pick it up. The next two weeks, I am going to aim to walk 15 miles each week. We are officially at the 24 week count down.

Amazingness
Today I received my largest donation by far. But that is not truly the most amazing part. The most amazing part is that this donation comes directly from my Aunt Tina, yes the one in my story above, and my uncle Greg, her husband. This couple has endured heartache and pain, and survived with love and confidence!! They really inspire me. Today's thank you goes to Tina and Greg!! I love you guys and am walking for you!!

Going the distance!
So, back on the training wagon, it is only Wed. and I have walked just about 5 miles. My goal this week is 12 miles. And I would like to start truly getting to my donation goal too. I need to write up some donation form letters and get them out at work and to friends and family to have them pass them out!!

CRAZY DAYS
So this week, being as crazy as it has been, I still put in almost 5 miles as of today. . .and hopefully with Sat. and Sunday I will tack on another 6 miles and make it an 11 mile week. . .my weeks run Monday to Monday. Hoping to find myself back on track this week--working hard, hitting the pavement. Depending on the weather, maybe Donna and I can do a walk from Guilford to Branford next Sat. We will see!

Training Week 1 Report
I managed to successfully wrack up about 10 miles this week and a night of Yoga. Not to bad for joining the bandwagon:). Looking to put in 14 or more miles this week. Though a lot going on so we will see!

Let's Get Moving!
I started my official training this week. I walked 3 miles on Tuesday, did an hour of yoga yesterday and intend on walking 3 miles tonight after Bela goes to slumberland. I was so sore today from the Yoga, it felt great to stretch, but man, I did not want to get out of bed this morning!! I did not want to feel my bones move:)!! Nothing like a hot shower for a cure! Anyhow, Donna keeps suggesting a pub crawl--I am all game, but I think we should wait till it's a teeny tiny bit warmer. . .that way if one of us passes out, we won't get hyperthermia!!:)LOL

We got "Inked"
As Donna likes to say, we got "inked". Donna and I ventured out and both got tattoos of the pink ribbon promoting breast cancer awareness with our team name, Torino's Hope, above it. It was Donna's first tattoo!! It was both an inspiring moment and a courageous one for her! Thanks for sharing it with me Donna! Committed to the cause and love for Tina, we got "Inked". Afterwards, we shared a drink and some stories. When we first got to the tattoo parlor, Donna, very eloquently announced to the reception area that she had a big mole near where she wanted the tattoo--it was very funny!
Well--our journal has begun and now it is a permanent part of us!

My First Team Members
A few people initially said they would join me. One of them was my auntie Donna:). However, after she really thought about it, she reconsidered joining me by walking, but would rather sponsor me. I knew that this would be an amazing thing for her to support her sister, Tina, and for her to say she walked 60 freakin miles, AND she fundraised $2200 for an amazing cause!! So, after trying to talk to her, I was sincerely disappointed, really beleiving she was not going to do it. After I went out, I came home to an email saying she had committed to the event and registered to be a walker!! YEAH! I am so proud of her! And I am so happy she is doing it with me!
In addition, my wonderful cousin and friend, was the first to say she was signing up with me officially! I am so happy that she too will be walking by my side and doing this amazing thing for me!! Missy-you're a rockstar man!!
Lastly, my kind and loving mother-in-law, Holly has decided to take this venture with me too! Having her love and blessing with us is very special to me!!
So, Donna, Missy and Holly-we are going to kick some buts and be an amazing team in August!
I love you all!

The Beginning
I kept saying I was going to do this, this walk. I knew in my heart that I wanted to do it, mostly for the power of hope it represents. But, the commitment itself was much more difficult. Will my friends and family really join me as they said they would? Can I really do this? The fundraising, the actual walk. . .
And the answer is yes, I can do this. I will do this and even if my personal friends and family cannot or do not do it, I will not be alone! I will be surrounded with other amazing women. . .
So, here I go. . .
