We're Steppin Up, Will you?

I've done a lot of crazy things in my life but this may be my boldest step ever! I have helped to form Team "Steppin' Up" and we will be taiking part in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in Tampa, FL. Beginnig October 31st, we will each walk 60 miles in the course of 3 days.
My inspiration for taking on this challenge came early this year when a very special lady friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Marcia is currently in the fight of her life and I felt that I need to take action to give her support.
Please support me, my team and all those that we are walking for as we take an amazing journey in the fight against breast cancer! Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.

It's gonna be a hot one, baby!
I ventured out on an 11K (that's a bit under 7 miles) walk yesterday with the Happy Wanderers group. We started on the beach in Ponce Inlet and walked to the jetty's then through the boardwalk to the lighthouse and around the neighborhood, back to our starting point.
We began at 8 am and by time we were half way through, I realized that the Florida heat was definately going to be a challenge to our training walks.
I also got my first training blister on my foot, so I have finally past that milestone!
More later...

Let the training begin!
Well we have officially started our 24-week team training program and have begun logging our miles. On Sunday (Mother's Day) I joined the local Volksmarching group, the Happy Wanderers on a 10K walk thru Daytona Beach. It was great to have a group of friendly folkes to share the miles with. I also managed 2 additional 5K walks so far this week for a total of 12+ miles to date. Eva, one of my team members, will join me this Sunday in another walk with the Wanderers in Mt. Dora.
Jill and I also went to the local Kiwani's chapter meeting this week to share our journey. They were quite generous in purchasing tickets for our upcoming fundraiser at Jackie Robinson Ballpark (Daytona Cubs) and then donated the tickets to the United Methodist Childrens Home, when a young man that Jill mentors currently resides. Their donation will allow 10 youngsters to attend the game on June 21st!
The City has also put up a link to our fundraiser. You can follow it here: http://cityofedgewater.org/step_flyer.pdf
Finally, but of utmost importance, my brother is cancer free! His surgery and treatment was sucessful. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers!

Steppin' Up at the Ballpark
Well we had a fundraising event at Space Coast Stadium Saturday night when the Manatees donated a bat signed by their team for us to raffle during the game against the Cubs. The fans were great and very supportive! Thanks to all who helped out! We were able to raise $365!!!!!! The gentleman who won the bat had left the game and choose not to return to pick it up, so it was donated back to our Steppin' Up team and will be a part of the silent auction we have scheduled for June 21st at Jackie Robinson Ballpark when the Cubs take on the Manatees.
Our next big event will be the Seaside Fiesta in New Smyrna Beach on June 19th.

Our first fundraising events!
This past weekend the team split up to tackle two fundraising events in our area. The weather wasn't on our side with high winds and cold temperatures, but it didn't diminish our spirits! We learned a lot and met some really great people and best of all, we were able to spread the word about our cause.
Additionally, we were able to raise over $300 towards our fundraising goals! Special thanks to Gwen for helping out despite the bad weather. The team has officially adopted her as our team mascot!!!!

Rearing it's ugly head!
Well the dreaded cancer has again made it's presence known, this time it has attacked my only brother. He was diagnosed last month with a cancer in this throat. So far they have removed his thyroid and today he began an round of intensive radiation theraphy. Please keep him and his family in your prayers! His name is Stan.
I know the power of prayer and I also know the power that comes when God's people join together with one voice for a cause. That is one reason why I have joined this journey.
Not only your prayers and good thoughts are welcome, but your finacial committment to help stamp out cancer in our lifetime is needed too! Join me in taking a stand!
Thank you for your support!

A minor setback
Well, I was acting foolish and managed to injure my right knee. Nothing permanent, but the Doc says I have to take it easy for a bit. I am still planning on beginning the 24 week training cycle with my team on May 11th. So I will be limping around for a few days but you can bet I will be back on track by the end of the month and will be ready to start "steppin' up" by training day!!!!

Alzheimers 5K
Last Saturday I was able to participate in a 5K walk that benefitted the Alzheimers Association. As you may know, my mom was affected with this devastating disease and the family suffered along with her until her passing last August.
During the walk, I carried some photos of mom and I really felt like she was taking the journey with me. It was an emotional day for me and I am so grateful that I had a chance to participate. The turn out was small, but my fellow walkers were passionate about the cause. I can only imagine the emotions that will prevail when thousands of walkers join together for the Breast Cancer 3 day in October.
Thanks again for all your support!
