Thanks for Supporting me (Iris) in my 4th 3-Day Walk!
Thanks for helping me raise $11,621.25 in 2008! I'm now starting to fundraise for my 2009 Walk! Please go to my new website: http://www.the3day.org/goto/IrisSVB2009Michigan and make a donation there!
Update as of 08/25/08: I have raised $3,676.00 this year for a grand total of $11,621.25 over the past 4 years... Still working on my pictures, (just home from a well-needed vacation) and will hopefully, have them posted soon!
********
My name is Iris Shen-Van Buren and I am walking the Breast Cancer 3-Day for the 4th time in 2008!! Please help me reach my goal of $4,500 this year by making a donation to my walk! Over the past 3 years, I've walked 180 miles in three 3 Day events and over 1,200 miles in training! Since 2005, I've raised over $7,945.25 & have trained over 1,200 miles! Please support me as I participate in my 4th Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk! Over the past 3 years, I've met some incredible men and women in the Breast Cancer 3-Day.
This year, I have enlisted the help of about 60+ knitters and crocheters who have squares and helped me assemble 3 very special blankets that will be auctioned in July and August to benefit my walk for 2008. I have also created a special "Check Your Breasts" washcloth that I will be selling (with soap and a Breast Self-Exam Card) for $15 to benefit my walk. (Those interested may also purchase the crochet pattern for a $5 donation.)
In the meantime, I have raised my minimum of $2,200, and have reached the next level of $3,000!! I ultimately hope to increase that amount to $4,500 by the time I walk in Chicago on August 8-10, 2008. (As of 08/05/08, I'm about $1,000 away from my big goal.) I'm very lucky to not have breast cancer in my family, but I have other friends who have not been as lucky.... I walk in honor of their battles against breast cancer and to the hope that, in the future, a cure can be found to help spare other women (and men) from this disease. The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a 60-mile walk over the course of three days. Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment.
Why I Walk....
I walk because I can... I walk because my best friend's mom is a breast cancer survivor I walk because my husband's grandma (who passed away at the age of 95 in 2005) was a breast cancer survivor I walk in honor of my friend who is currently going through treatment...and I pray that she will also become breast cancer survivors... I walk in honor of my other friends and classmates who are breast cancer survivors or are currently undergoing treatment... I walk because I care. I walk because I believe I can make a difference.... I walk because I can and others can't. As a child, I wanted to do cancer research and to become a doctor... As a college student, my life plans changed.... I married my husband, Eric, (who now works at a university doing cancer research). I believe my job at a university could result in a future student working on cancer research. I believe that the 3-Day walk is one way I can make the difference I envisioned as a child and I hope that you can be a part of it, too...
I am walking for the following people this year:
In Honor of: Kathleen Cadaret Julie Carmen Chloe O. C. Clement Cathy M. & Dorothy H. Tery Wong *Glen Brough Sharon Liang In Support of: Jeanette Crockett's Sister, Pam Anderson Debbie Barker Sr. Judy Dutka Maxine Yaw Mrs. D. Cochraine Saundra Bos
In Memory of: Eric's Grandma, Anne Van Buren (who passed away as a long-time survivor) *3 of my 4 grandparents who all passed away from different forms of cancer *Mrs. Regina Kass *Auntie Jean Unger *Kelly Linderman Constance Howard & Dorothy Dillard Auntie Angela's Sisters
*Had a cancer other than Breast Cancer
Iris' 3-Day Journey for 2008!

I can't believe it, I've just finished my 4th 3-Day.... The people and route in Chicago were fantastic and I enjoyed nearly every minute of my experience (except for a few blisters on my feet!)
There is so much to share with everyone--It may take a few weeks for me to get my photos up, but definitely hope to share them with my friends and family....
More to come.....

Make a donation to my walk for a minimum of $10 and you will be entered into a drawing on Aug. 10th of the 3rd of my 4 fundraiser Blankets!
Also, a 4th blanket will be going to the person who makes the largest donation (per my donor site) by August 10, 2008.
Please help me reach my larger goals of $3,000 and then $4,500 towards my walk!!! ;-)
You may end up with one of these beautifully hand-made blankets! Each square was knit or crocheted with love by people across the U.S. and including a knitter from Belgium. I then assembled the pieces to make the final blankets as shown....
The final recipient of the blanket will be wrapped up in 20 hugs every time the blanket is being used...
Good luck!!! and thanks in advance for your help!!

I woke up on Sunday morning worried about whether or not we'd have nice weather for the Pink-a-Palooza BBQ & mini concert....
Well, at around 11 am, the clouds parted and the sun came out! Hubby & I had cleared the living room in preparation for a 2ndary plan in case of rain....but we took the plunge when the sun came out and set up outside...
A more beautiful day could not be had! :-)
The weather was nice--warm, but not so hot that people couldn't stay outside. Since our party started at 3 pm, the shade trees kept our backyard nice and cool....
One of our bands failed to show, but the other 3 solo acts were great as was Eric's band, "Ask Alice" (http://www.myspace.com/askaliceband).... hot dogs and Burgers were flying off the grill and our friends and family enjoyed the martial arts skills of my good friend, Cheryl.
A fun time was had by all!!!
1 blanket was auctioned off, the other was won by a friend via a drawing, but then donated back to the fundraiser, so I'm hoping to get even more donations from it....
I raised about $1600 (and counting) and with my prior donations and checks, etc., I am just a little shy of my minimum. :-) It was a lot of work, but the fundraiser was fun and raised a lot of money. (I'm already starting to have visions of what it will be next year....)
My personal website has a few details, including photos of the blankets that were created for the cause. Enjoy! :0)

The squares are trickling in-- I am amazed at the number of knitters and crocheters who are helping me in my endeavor to create these 3 special fund-raising blankets.... I'm knitting and crocheting like crazy and am getting ready to set up my fundraiser concert at the end of July.
Talked to several musical groups last night and my musician friends are coming out of the wood-work to help me. It's absolutely amazing.

Working on my 3rd and 4th squares-- 3 knitted and 1 crocheted... :-)
Each day, I run to my mailbox looking for more squares... :-) So far, I have 5 squares out of 60....
I've also been creating a very special crochet pattern to remind women to check their breasts when in the shower... :-) The pattern is in the test phase right now, but once it's ready, I will have it available for sale as a fundraiser... :-)
Just like walking and fundraising, every little bit of help will allow me reach the goal of helping fund breast cancer research.... :-)

I finished knitting my first square today. Also, when I went to my mailbox today, i discovered a nice surprise-- a fellow hiker on one of the websites I visit sent in her square for my blanket!! :-)
So, I have 2 squares... only 58 more to go! ;-)
Will start knitting a new square tonight....
In the meantime, I've also been working on some other fundraiser projects--I decided to make some very cute washcloths to help remind women to do their breast self-exam. I'm also working on getting a pattern for the washcloths--one that I can sell as a fundraiser as well..... Lots of knitting/crocheting and walking to do in the next 2 months! :-)
Woo HOO!!!!

I put out a call to friends and family to help me knit squares for my Breast Cancer 3-Day Blanket fundraiser... and the response was overwhelming!
I have now decided to put together 3 blankets of 20 squares each-- to represent the 3 days of walking I will do!
I will also be at the World Wide Knitting in Public day at Cranbrook Institute of Arts on Saturday, June 14th-- where I will be working on piecing together my blankets and continuing to knit squares for the remaining blankets....
This has turned out to be a bigger project than expected and I hope that I can generate a lot of donations through the blankets... :-)

This year, as one of my fundraisers, I'm gathering friends to help me knit a blanket that I will be auctioning in July, 2008 to help fundraise for my walk in Chicago!
When all is said and done, my hope is to have a 4 x 5 square blanket (composed of 10" squares) lovingly knitted by friends and family.... 20 squares for the 20 miles I walk each day of the 3 Day... :-)
Look forward to more info in the days to come... (and if it works, I will try to add links to photos, too.)
In the meantime, I'm continuing to work on my 3 day art project, using the shoes/gloves, etc. that were donated to me by previous 3-Day Walkers....
My hope is to have a silent auction/fundraiser in July to help me raise funds for the walk in 2008.
Stay tuned as I make my way to my 4th 3 Day Journey-- This year, I'll walk in Chicago--(my baby brother is getting married during the 3 Day in Michigan!) and I'm looking forward to a new adventure!!!
