When my Grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the late 70s, I didn't really understand how serious it was. I know now that our family was fortunate to have her around for nearly another 30 years. It is in her honour, and in honour of the other warriors I have known who have done battle with this disease, that I am once again walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day.

My "twin" has cancer...
Last night I found out that a woman who trains at the same dojo I do has breast cancer. I call this woman my "twin" because we share the same birthday. A few years ago, we both went in to train on our 40th birthday because that was the best way we could think of to celebrate being 40.
I haven't seen Marlene in a long time. Working full time as I do now has meant a lot less time at the dojo for me, and Marlene had health issues that kept her away. Still, for me, hearing that Marlene has cancer just brought home once again how this disease strikes women of any age.
I am more committed than ever to finding a cure.

Take your training opportunities where you can
So, your bus breaks down a few miles from work. Do you a)Stand and wait for the next bus to come along or b)See this for the training opportunity it is?
If you're a 3-Day Walker, the latter, of course. I'd no idea, when my bus broke down this morning, how far I was from work. I figured it was fewer than 5 miles and if I were planning to walk 20 miles a day in September, I could darn well walk a couple on a cloudy May morning. So walk I did.
My only disappointment was that it really was only 2 miles. I was kind of hoping to get that 5 mile sticker on my badge. :-) Ah well, there's always the next time...

Wonderful donors!
The people who work at my company are so awesome. I have a piggy bank at my desk, and people have been coming by, dropping change and dollars into the pig. Some have handed me bigger bills. Some have asked about passing the word along to other people they know. I'll admit, I lured them over with the promise of food, but since the food is gone and they keep coming back, I don't think that's it.
It's just great to work with such generous people. I can't thank my wonderful donors enough.

Training, & etc.
So, how do you train when you're too busy to get to Karate? Good question. My answer. Stairs.
I work in a tall office building in downtown Seattle and recently discovered the stairs. I can't climb them in the morning to get up to my floor (exit only at the bottom), but I shoot down 11 1/2 floors everytime I leave the building--for lunch, shopping, end of day--and have been trying to do 10 flights up and down on a daily basis for endurance. That's 210 stairs each way. I'm hoping to add more, but 210 stairs up non-stop leaves me a bit wheezy, so I'll take it slowly for now.
Almost halfway there on the fundraising. Thank you, Attenex (the company I work for). That $500 donation was from them. And thanks to everyone else for helping me along. We're looking good.

Yay!
When I signed up for this walk, even though I've done it before, I was so worried about the fundraising. I'm still worried. It's a lot of money. But my fledgling fundraising efforts have actually begun to pay off. It's so heartening to see that first donation appear.
I feel so strongly about this. I know there are other great causes out there, but because cancer has touched my family in so many ways, I consider efforts to find a cure very important indeed.
Knowing that other people think it's important, and support me in this, really makes my day.

The Journey Begins
After skipping a year to get my life back in order--or at least as much order as it can have at the moment--I'm back and ready to play. Not sure how this is going to work now that I'm working full time, but I'm committed to walking next year. I really feel like I missed out, not walking in 2007, although I KNOW in my head that it was best for me and my family that I skip a year. Still, watching the 2007 walkers crossing Lake Washington on I-90 in September really got me jazzed to do the 3-day again. Stay tuned for more as I work my way toward the 2008 3-day.
